To add to the enjoyment of a stay in our Guest House, I have looked into some visitor attractions which, over the years, have provided a varied source of entertainment for our guests.

They are all within easy striking distance and each one would reward either a short visit or a longer, more detailed exploration.

The following list is by no means exhaustive but gives an idea of the sort of places the East Northamptonshire, North Cambridgeshire  & South Lincolnshire offers.

Burghley:  More than just a Stately Home, Burghley offers something for everyone:

  • a glimpse into the way great houses have been furnished and inhabited from the time of Elizabeth I to the present day:

  • the Brewhouse - a new interactive visitor interpretation centre

  • two fantastic gardens that delight the senses, educate and astonish , The Garden of Surprises and the Sculpture Garden:

  • a diary of events throughout the year from Easter Egg Hunts to Concerts in the park, Burghley Horse Trials and Various Fairs and Shows.

Your visit to Burghley can take up a whole day just within the building itself, or a quick visit to the delightful gardens followed by lunch in the Orangery is a pleasant way to spend a few hours.

Stanwick Lakes:  having something to appeal to everyone, from families to keen birdwatchers.  Wide open spaces, tranquil waters and over 7 miles of footpaths/cycle trails.  For the more energetic there is a full size assault course and an adventure trail which includes a climbing rock, a rope bridge and a zip wire.  The central play area is always a favourite with children visiting the site.

Lyveden New Bield (sometimes called New Build):  is a 400 year old banqueting house which sits alongside one of the oldest surviving gardens of the Elizabethan  age.  It was built, but never completed by Sir Thomas Tresham between 1595 and his death in 1605.  In addition to having the building and gardens to appreciate but also is the gateway to some of the loveliest walks in Northamptonshire.

Kirby Hall:  set in magnificent grounds where peacocks roam free, this mansion was begun in 1570 and completed by Sir Christopher Hatton with 17th century alterations.  It also has a wonderful footpath running through the grounds which allows one a look back over this impressive building.

East of England Showground:  home to many of the area shows and exhibitions, promoting and supporting - Farming and the Countryside: -  Rural Life and the Environment: -  Locally Sourced Produce and British Food.

Annual events here include:

  • East of England Show/Championship Dog Show

  • Peterborough Festival of Hunting

  • Christmas Festival

  • Shire Horse Spring Show

  • Farm Business Awards

In addition to these venues the small market towns of Oundle and Stamford are also well worth spending some time in.

Of course we are always pleased to hear of any other attractions that our guests find particularly satisfying to visit , so that they may be included in future articles about the benefits of visiting our Guest House in Fotheringhay , East Northamptonshire.
